Social media is a great way to connect with people, spread messages and unite over a singular cause. Embrace it! Below is a quick beginner’s tutorial for Facebook, Instagram and Twitter.

Facebook is the leading social media platform. It’s popular because it’s fun and easy to use. Here’s the good news: if you have a Facebook account you can sign up for Instagram and Twitter quickly and painlessly. Here’s the better news:if you don’t have a Facebook account, you can sign up for one right now.

Step 1: Create an account

Go to Facebook’s website. Select ‘Sign Up’. Fill in the boxes with your information. You may need to confirm your email address or phone number. Select a profile photo.

Step 2: Find and follow friends

Click the magnifying glass at the top of your Facebook toolbar. Type in Sound Defense Alliance and select the account. You’ll be able to see our posts, followers and other information.

Step 3: Like posts, comment and share

Once you’re on someone’s page you can select follow to see what they post. Clicking the thumbs up below a post will like it. To comment on a post, click on the speech bubble, type your comment and then select comment. The curved arrow button at the bottom of a post will share this post with your friends.

Step 4: Create a post

Your post can be as simple or as complex as you want. Go to your profile by clicking on your photo. In the box where it says, “What’s on your mind?” click and start typing your message. You can add photos by clicking on the —. If you want certain people to see your post, select tag people. From here you can search for users and tag them in posts and photos. Once you’re satisfied, select share.

Instagram is very similar to Facebook, but a little simpler. Also, you can link your Instagram to your Facebook which makes it easy to share pictures across both platforms. This increases the number of people with who you can share! You can follow the steps below to get started, or you can also watch this video on YouTube.

Step 1: Download the app

Using your smart phone go to the App Store and search for Instagram. Download the app.

Step 2: Sign up

Fill in the boxes with your name, email address, username and password. You can also click the “Login with Facebook” button…this makes the sign up process faster and it links your Facebook and Instagram accounts.

Step 3: Follow users

Instagram will suggest people for you to follow, especially if you’ve linked your account with your Facebook. You can look for people by clicking the magnifying glass at the bottom of your screen. Type in Sound Defense Alliance, click on our profile. You’ll be able to see our profile page and posts. Click the Follow button.

Step 4: “Like” posts, comment on posts and share posts

From the profile page, click on a post (photo). Select the heart at the bottom of the post to like it, select the speech bubble to leave a comment, or if you’d like to share the post, then select the paper airplane. You can then share the post with your followers.

Step 5: Create posts

To create a post simply select the plus button at the bottom of your screen. Instagram will ask for access to your photos, agree to this. The last photo or video you took will pop up first, less recent photos will appear below. Swipe up and select which media you would like to share. Select “Next” and then select a filter or select next again. Write a caption…keep it short and sweet. Use hashtags (#) for your post to get more follows, likes and shares. [Caption example: Keep our skies free of additional Growler jets! #nonewflightsnonewjets #noisepollution #whidbeyisland #sounddefensealliance] Once you’ve written a caption, you can swipe the bar next to Facebook to share your Instagram post on your Facebook page as well. Finally, click Share.

Twitter is an even shorter, sweeter version of Instagram. Mostly used for news, it’s a helpful platform for following elected officials and making sure your opinions are heard!

Step 1: Download the app

Using your smart phone go to the App Store and search for Twitter. Download the app.

Step 2: Sign up

Fill in the boxes with your name, email address, username and password. You can also click the “Login with Facebook” button…this makes the sign up process faster and it links your Facebook and Twitter accounts.

Step 3: Follow users

Select the magnifying glass at the bottom of your screen. In the search box type Sound Defense Alliance. Click the Follow button.

Step 4: Like tweets, comment on tweets and retweet (share)

From the profile page, scroll through tweets select the heart at the bottom of the tweet to like it, select the speech bubble to leave a comment, or if you’d like to retweet the post, then select the two arrows button. You can retweet something outright or you can retweet it with a comment. This is helpful with news reports/articles and then commenting with your opinion.

Step 5: Tweet a message

To tweet simply select the plus/quill button at the top of your screen. Type your message into the box that says”What’s happening?” Twitter puts a limit on your message so keep it short and sweet. You can use hashtags (#) for your tweet to get more follows, likes and retweets, but keep in mind that this takes up valuable text space. Since Twitter is a perfect political platform, it’s useful to tweet at specific people who are related to your message. While you’re typing your message select @ and then the person’s twitter handle (username). [Tweet example: Growler jet noise will be harmful to our Orcas @GovInslee #nonewjetsnonewflights] You can also select photos to tweet, simply scroll though your photos and select one. Once you’re satisfied with your tweet, click Tweet.
