Coupeville – The Sound Defense Alliance applauds Attorney General Bob Ferguson for standing up for the people of NW Washington. Today the Attorney General’s office announced that it would file a lawsuit against the Navy for their failure to adequately analyze human health, environmental and historic impacts decision prior to expanding its operations on Whidbey Island.
“Across the State our elected officials are listening. We have been working to raise the voices of the people across NW Washington who have been most impacted by the punishing noise from the massive expansion of the Growler jet program. The expansion, authorized in March of this year, increases Growler take-offs and landings to nearly 100,000 per year for the next 30 years and has had an immediate and severe impact on the people of NW Washington,” said Maryon Atwood, Chair of the SDA Legislative Committee from Whidbey Island.
“For decades, communities across NW Washington and the Navy have been able to find a balance of protecting our national security and the health and well-being of our communities. The expansion that is the subject of the lawsuit has taken away that balance and must be corrected. To take on the Navy, we need to be working as many vehicles for impact as possible – right now the legislative and judicial branches of government are fully engaged. SDA will continue to focus on working with our elected leaders to advance legislative opportunities to reverse this decision, while applauding the efforts of the Attorney General and other parties who choose this path,” Rhea Miller, Chair of the SDA Board, Lopez Island.
